What is there to complain about this week?

Crime and punishment

The average fine in 2010 for people caught driving without motor insurance in Lincolnshire was £213, compared to £650 for typical premiums, Lincoln MP Karl McCartney said. With fines so low, is it any wonder that some people try to avoid paying motor insurance?

Footballer under fire

Scotland striker Garry O’Connor is due back in court later this month to answer insurance fraud charges. The Hibernian FC player is alleged to have made a fraudulent claim of almost £100,000 following a crash involving his Ferrari.

Safety first

Insurers should make sure that homes they cover are equipped with carbon monoxide detectors, according to Labour MP Barry Sheerman. He told parliament that the requirement should be enshrined in law.

Joint action

MPs have tabled a motion calling for a government action plan to tackle the rising cost of motor insurance. The motion also calls for a cross-government committee on motor insurance, responsibility for which is currently split between departments.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
