Automobile Association members are expected to accept Centrica's £1.1 billion offer for the breakdown recovery service.

Centrica, the demerged domestic supply arm of British Gas, is seeking to add to its household services business, which already sells electricity alongside credit cards, home insurance, plumbing and mobile phone services.

Votes poured into the AA, before yesterday's postal vote deadline. Members can still vote in person at a meeting at London Arena on September 16.

AA advisers are concerned not to give the impression that the deal has already been approved.

Two-thirds of AA members voting will need to support the deal if the offer is to go ahead. Only 4.6m eligible members – mostly personal members – are allowed to vote. Eligible members only will each receive windfalls of £240 if the offer is approved.
