The AA has added emergency veterinary fee cover free of charge to its Five Star Personal Travel Insurance policy.

The free upgrade supercedes the AA Five Star Pet Travel Insurance scheme, which was trialled last year.

The extra cover will allow pet owners who take their animals to Europe under the passports for pets scheme to recover up to £250 in vets fees.

This should pay for an examination of a sick or injured pet and initial treatment without the need for them to endure a stressful trip back to England.

Jeanne Johnson, manager of AA Five Star, said: “We want to set our Five Star Personal Travel Insurance customer's minds at rest by giving them the option to seek immediate veterinary treatment for their pet before resuming their journey.”

The five star travel policy also covers emergency animal boarding costs up to £400.
