Ace European Group has launched an e-commerce D&O initiative for brokers focusing on UK SMEs.

European liability manager Pat Drinan said the system would allow brokers to get a quote "within minutes" without the added administrative and manpower costs.

"D&O is often regarded as a difficult class to write, but if you have the correct data and the underwriting skill, then it is very simple.

A manufacturer in Leeds with a £20m turnover is no different from one in Manchester," said Drinan.

"We have worked with a team of actuaries to put together the pricing structure and we can now offer brokers a system which gives an instant quote plus the benefits of contract certainty," he added.

But Drinan said, on trailing the system, brokers were unhappy with the idea of going straight online without the traditional negotiation with the underwriter.

"We have made sure that an underwriter is always available on the end of the telephone to answer any queries," Drinan said.
