Sexual harassment and discrimination charges have been filed against Aon Corporation's largest consumer insurance underwriting company.

Ten current and former female employees have accused the Combined Insurance Company of America of condoning and encouraging a culture of sexual harassment and oppression.

Last month, staff at its Chicago office filed a nationwide class action lawsuit in a federal court. They claimed to suffer from extreme sexual harassment which included verbal taunting.

A statement made by lawyers for the women, said: "Combined management, which is overwhelmingly male, is charged with tolerating and often participating in the harassment.

"Combined allegedly retaliated against women who complained about the harassment, either by further harassing them or forcing them out of the company."

It added that Combined was also accused of discriminating against women in hiring, pay and promotions.

"Male managers graded female job applicants by their appearance and body type," it alleged. They allegedly used demeaning physical descriptions like "great legs", "nice tits", and "great ass" to rate female candidates.

Combined chairman and chief executive officer Richard Ravin said: "Combined is an equal opportunity employer that puts the highest priority on fairness and diversity in the workplace. We have long-standing policies against sexual harassment and discrimination and, as a matter of practice, do not tolerate such behaviours in our company."
