Aviva boss to take up role at transport business, Sky News reports

Aviva chairman John McFarlane is to leave the insurer to take up the role of chairman at bus and rail operator FirstGroup, Sky News reports.

McFarlane joined Aviva in 2011. He has served as executive chairman since July 2012.

He has been a key figure in driving forward the company’s strategic plans to improve financial performance.

McFarlane will replace Martin Gilbert, who also runs investment group Aberdeen Asset Management and is a non-executive director of BSkyB.

FirstGroup is Britain’s largest bus operator, running more than 20% of all local bus services. Its passenger rail franchises include First Great Western and First Capital Connect.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
