“Never received a reminder” claim fails to stop ban

BBC East Midlands weatherman Des Coleman has been banned by Nottingham magistrates for driving without insurance claiming he never received a reminder, the Nottingham Post reports.

Coleman was stopped by police in Upper Parliament Street on 13 November last year. He admitted driving without insurance but said he was unaware his cover had run out on 6 November and had not had a reminder from his insurer.

"I'm absolutely gutted," he said. "In a sense I'm glad they stopped me because otherwise I could have been driving without insurance for a long time."

Already banned

The court was told he had already been given a six-week ban earlier this week for speeding.

His driving ban will run concurrently with the six-week disqualification already in force. He was also fined £800 with £200 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
