Biba today urged more travel insurers to provide cover against terrorism in response to a 274% rise in terrorist attacks since 2003.

Since 9/11 the majority of travel insurers have imposed blanket terrorism exclusions on their policies, leaving many consumers without insurance protection if another attack should occur, Biba said.

Biba's Protect cover, available through Biba brokers, does not make exclusions in respect of medical expenses and emergency repatriation following a terrorism incident, with the exception of attacks using nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

Graeme Trudgill, BIBA's technical services manager, said: “In today's uncertain climate, people travelling abroad should ensure that they have comprehensive cover in place.

"Travel insurance is just as vital as your suitcase when going abroad, and to ensure that you have the right policy for you, you should seek professional advice from an insurance broker, as opposed to accepting inferior cover from a travel agent for example, just because it is more convenient.”
