Bodyshop repairers are being caught between "a rock and a hard place" by manufacturers and insurers, warned trade body the Retail Motor Industry.

"On the one hand, manufacturers urge their dealers to use their numbered products and materials," said Bob Hood, senior manager.

"While, on the other, some insurers and work providers dictate the use "non-oem" panels, lamps and radiators - and even specify the make of paint to be used - in order to reduce costs."

Some bodyshops report having to install three paint mixing systems to satisfy different work providers.
