Staff at jewellery claims specialist Loss Management Group (LMG) are still bemused by bizarre descriptions of how claimants came to lose or damage their precious gems.

In one of their latest cases, a woman explained in great detail how a stone from an engagement ring she was wearing went missing after she "forcibly and manually turned" her large boxer dog on to his back in her kitchen to treat a skin condition on his chest.

She told LMG: "This is achieved by sharply pulling his right fore- and hind-legs towards me from underneath thus unbalancing him. In so doing - and because of his weight - the backs of my hands hit the floor very hard."

The mind boggles.
