Burglars are costing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) more than £3 billion a year, according to Norwich Union.

Independent research commissioned by the insurer shows nearly one SME in two has been burgled in the last five years at an average cost of £3,000 per break in – a figure which includes the costs of business disruption.

The findings were revealed to co-incide with the launch of a new guide from the Norwich to encourage small business people to become more security conscious.

Called "Taking Security Seriously" it aims to cut the number of claims arising from crime. The guide is available through brokers or direct from Norwich Union.
