Aon has called on UK businesses to take part in the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) consultations on the EC Environmental Liability Directive (ELD).

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) explains, this law "makes companies that cause environmental damage financially responsible for restoring and preventing that damage and goes further in its inclusion of biodiversity damage".

Defra is holding consultations on the ELD ahead its enactment in European member states on 30 April 2007. Bob Martin, a director in environmental and consulting solutions division, said the directive is likely to impact all UK businesses.

Defra, which was meant to be holding consultation earlier this year is believed to have delayed the discussions until early next year.

Responses can be submitted by individual entities or through trade associations and professional bodies, such as AIRMIC. The deadline for comments is 16 February 2007.
