At the annual general meeting, a number of CGNU shareholders are expected to refuse to back the proposed name change to Aviva, the Financial Times has reported.
The proposal is likely to be unpopular for a range of reasons, including the expense and disruption it would cause.
It provoked widespread criticism in the press when it was announced in late February. A number of other organisations with the name were also discovered, including a Canadian lesbian website, a London feminist group and an Argentinian tea.
The National Association of Pension Funds is reportedly recommending its members abstain from voting because it is concerned about a complaint from Arriva. The UK transport group is said to be concerned the two companies would get confused.
CGNU said it remains confident that enough members will vote for the name change in the crucial vote.
