Coronation Street's new storyline about local councillor Audrey Roberts is a load of old cobblers, the Association of Local Authority Risk Managers (Alarm) has said.

The storyline has Roberts tripping over a cobblestone in the famous Manchester street, then attempting to use her position to have the cobbles tarmacked over. Other Corrie residents have mounted a campaign to save their beloved cobblestones, in a fictional move that will no doubt be closely followed by the real-life tabloids.

An Alarm spokesman said councils did receive complaints and claims related to pedestrian falls but they more often related to poorly maintained paved areas than to cobbled streets.

“Also, people are more aware of the risk of tripping on cobblestones so they tend to walk over cobbled areas with more care,” he said.

Take that, Audrey.
