A flood hit north east council is negotiating with insurers to set up a bulk buy scheme for its worst affected households.

National Flood Forum chairman Patrick Tucker told a seminar at today’s ABI conference that 150 households in the Morpeth district of Northumberland were unable to secure flood insurance in the wake of the 2008 floods that hit the area.

He told the seminar that the local authority in Morpeth was talking to a number of insurers about doing a deal to cover the households in question.

He said: "They have been seeking to do a deal with one insurance company for this particular area.”
