The Lutine Bell at Lloyd's was rung twice this week in honour of the visit of Chancellor Gordon Brown and US treasury secretary John Snow.

But it seems Lloyd's was lucky to get two chimes out of the rusty ringer after it was reported that, hours prior to the visit of the two dignitaries, a piece of metal had fallen from it.

A Lloyd's spokesman admitted that something had fallen down from the bell, but denied that it was a piece of metal.
