Much is said about attracting university graduates into the industry. But it isn't that often you hear about brokers leaving the profession to go to university.

Well, Backchat has been told that after 30 odd years in the industry, Mike Dickson of broker Dickson Manchester fame (now HCC International Insurance Company) has decided to choose the gown rather than the town.

He told Backchat: "I have always wanted to try my hand at university and now seems the right time. I have provisional places at four universities but my heart is set on studying war studies at King's College London."

Dickson will officially leave HCC International on 31 March and then hopes to begin his course in September this year.

On enquiring whether he would be dressing up to collect money during Fresher's Week, Dickson assured Backchat that his dignity would remain intact.

"But for those who may think this is a midlife crisis, I have to admit I bought a two-seater sports car the other week."
