Cameras in petrol stations will be used to snare uninsured drivers
Petrol station cameras will be used as the latest weapon to crackdown on uninsured drivers.
The plan is being taken so seriously that Downing Street officials will meet representatives from the fuel industry in the coming weeks, according to the Mirror newspaper.
Currently, all petrol stations have automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), which only allow motorists to fill up on fuel once the licence plate has been logged.
The system deters motorists from driving off without paying for fuel.
But advances in technology mean the cameras could be used to log licence plates and cross-reference it with the DVLA.
If uninsured, the motorists would be prevented from filling up their car and the DVLA would also kick-off enforcement procedures.
One in 25 drivers in the UK do not have insurance – one of the worst records in western Europe.
Accident involving uninsured drivers are mopped up by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, which all insurers pay in to.
