Claims-free driving records in other European Union member states will be recognised by Irish insurers when the driver buys motor insurance in Ireland, the Irish Insurance Federation (IIF) has announced.

Insurance buyers will be allowed an equivalent no claims discount on their Irish premium.

The change was the IIF's second step in complying with the Motor Insurance Advisory Board (MIAB) report on Irish motor insurance.

IIF chief executive Mike Kemp said the IIF had also made good progress on drafting guidelines for the investigation and settlement as personal injury cases, also recommended by the MIAB.

As well, IIF members have backed the MIAB's recommendation on supporting injured claimants with appropriate vocational rehabilitation programmes.

However, Kemp said there was "insufficient legal and medical infrastructure to allow such programmes to be put into practice on a wider scale."
