Homeowners urged to take action by Fortis'

Fortis is warning homeowners to make sure they are prepared for problems caused by the thaw following the recent cold weather.

The insurer's campaign, which it calls 'Thaw', urges homeowners to follow important steps such as checking taps, heating, attics and lofts and all sources of water.

Up to 30% of all property claims are for damage caused by an escape of water, with the average household claim costing £2000, Fortis claims.

The campaign is supported by the British Insurance Brokers' Association and property repairs firm Rok to help reduce the negative impact of escape of water and is offering a free-to-download, risk management advice guide for every household.

Gary Lobb, head of operations for household and travel claims at Fortis said: "The free advice guide has some very simple checks that apply to virtually all households."

He added: "They are straightforward to follow and could save a great deal of money, disruption and loss of personal items and valuable possessions. The snow may have thawed in some parts of the country which brings fresh problems and elsewhere snow is predicted again so ‘act now!' is the advice."

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
