Hastings-Bass credited as ‘driving force’ behind broker’s move to Asia Pacific

Arthur J Gallagher’s chairman of international development John Hastings-Bass will retire in January.

Hastings-Bass became international chairman in September and was previously managing director of underwriting and distribution, chairman of Asia Pacific and of Gallagher’s international energy business, Alesco. He joined Gallagher from JLT in 2007, where he was chief executive of its international business division covering Asia Pacific, continental Europe, Canada and Latin America.

International chief executive David Ross said: “When John joined us in 2007 we were far from fashionable and the business was a long way from the circa 6,500 people operation we are today. But he saw in us great potential, and knew we could deliver on our ambitions.

“It was John’s knowledge and experience of the geographies that make up our footprint outside of the UK that shaped our initial strategy for expansion into the international marketplace; he was the driving force behind our move into Asia Pacific.

“On a personal note I would like to thank John for his strategic insight and international vision. His knowledge, passion and sense of humour will be missed by everyone that has worked closely with him in his various roles here at Arthur J Gallagher.”
