Maurice "Hank" Greenberg has resigned from the board of troubled insurer AIG with immediate effect.

In a letter to AIG's board, Greenberg said he had decided to step down now because of his "inability to receive information regarding the company and its operations necessary to fulfill my fiduciary duties."

Greenberg had already resigned from his positions as chief executive and chairman of AIG after heading the company for nearly 38 years.

New York authorities filed a civil lawsuit against AIG and former executives, including Greenberg, accusing them of fraud on 26 May.
