Appointment follows Watson’s promotion in February

Lloyd’s insurer Hiscox has appointed chief underwriting officer Richard Watson to its board as an executive director.

Watson took over the chief underwriting officer’s role from Rob Childs in February after Childs became Hiscox chairman.

Watson joined Hiscox in 1986. He has underwritten various lines of  business for the company, including political risks, specie, professional indemnity, and reinsurance.

In 2006, Watson became managing director of Hiscox London Market and active underwriter for Syndicate 33. He moved to the US in 2009 to become chief executive of of Hiscox USA .

He returned to London in September 2012 to become deputy chief underwriting officer. Before working at Hiscox, Watson worked as a broker at Sedgwick and Hogg Robinson.

Childs said: “I am delighted Richard has joined the Hiscox board. I believe he is admirably qualified to guide the group in the next phase of its development.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
