Police department sets out its priorities for 2014

The Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) has announced that it will focus on fraudulent travel insurance claims and credit hire companies for the first half of 2014.

IFED detective chief inspector Dave Wood told Insurance Times that the two areas would be key priorities for the police unit up until the summer.

The department’s focus throughout the latter half of 2013 was ghost broking, with IFED making 28 arrests in the area in October alone.

It also launched a ghost broking awareness campaign in November which, it said, resulted in a 14% rise in awareness of the issue.

IFED was set up by the ABI as a three-year programme in 2012, with its current funding set to finish at the end of 2014.

IFED will present a report to the ABI in March to propose extending the department into 2015 and beyond.

“All indications are that [IFED] will continue,” Wood said.
