A travel and insurance agency has today pleaded guilty and been fined by Nottingham Magistrates for offences under the Data Protection Act.

The charges were brought by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) against the director and the company secretary of Ram Finance and Insurance Services for failing to notify that they had processed personal information.

Yohanna Yaro and Rosella Yaro were each fined £300 and ordered to pay £300 costs.

The company, which no longer trades, was given a three year conditional discharge.

Philip Taylor, solicitor at the Information Commissioner's Office, said: “It is a legal requirement for the majority of businesses that process people's personal information to notify with us at the Information Commissioner's Office.

"The cost is minimal and ensures that companies will not be in breach of the Data Protection Act – breaches which can result in these lengthy and costly legal proceedings.

“This successful prosecution is a reminder to those organisations that are failing to notify that we stand ready to use our powers to prosecute the small minority of businesses that flout the Act.

"Compliance ensures that individuals' personal information is secure, accurate, up-to-date and is processed fairly.”
