It's official: buying insurance is pretty much the most boring thing any living organism can do – duller even than ironing.

That was the key finding of opinion pollster NOP research commissioned by the self-styled independent insurance forum, Inspop.com

The study, which spoke to 1,000 people aged 15 and above, shows that 61% find insurance buying dull, while 59% hate ironing.

Inspop.com managing director Sara Murray said: "It isn't surprising to find people think buying insurance is boring as it's never going to be a desirable purchase where people get excited."

Inspop's study asked which of the industry's failings were most infuriating. It found that insurance providers' cardinal sin is placing customers on hold, with 86% of respondents citing this as their main gripe.
