Workplace bullying is rife in the insurance industry, an industry study has found.

A report published by Chartered Management Institute has revealed almost 29 per cent of managers have been the victims of bullying in the past three years.

The report, titled "Bullying at work: the experience of managers'", is a joint initiative of Chartered Management Institute, trade union Unison and independent statuatory body Acas.

Of the public and private organisations surveyed a majority cited overbearing supervision, verbal insults and overloading as the most common forms of bullying.

Meanwhile, less than 14 per cent of people reported incidents of physical initmidation or violence.

The report stated that victimisation occurred at all levels of management from directors to junior managers.

Although 93 per cent of people surveyed felt line management was important in resolving issues of bullying in the workplace, at least 42 per cent reported that no action had been taken by their employer.
