Financial services companies are well represented in newly released indexes designed to encourage ethical investment.

Three insurance companies make the FTSE4Good UK 50 Index, with CGNU taking 11th place, Prudential 15th place and Royal & Sunalliance in 27th place.

CGNU and Prudential also make it into the European top 50 with a number of other insurers, including Allianz, Axa, Zurich and Aegon.

FTSE4Good indexes lets investors track the performance of companies with high standards of corporate social responsibility.

The criteria for entry are environmental stability, relationship with stakeholders and support for human rights. In a result which some might find surprising, the company topping the UK and Europe lists is oil giant BP.
