Fortis has recorded a £1.07m loss for the third quarter as losses from its equity portfolio undermine its performance.

The loss compares with a profit of £335m in the same period last year. Fortis' net loss over the first nine months was £55m, compared with a profit of £1.27bn in the same period last year.

Chairman Anton van Rossum said: "Due to the exceptional developments in the equity markets worldwide, as from mid-July the market value of our portfolio fell below its original cost for the first time in the history of Fortis."
