36,000-strong petition opposes Willis but fails to stop naming

An online petition at www.itsthesearstower.com has more than 36,000 names, calling on Willis to scrap its renaming of the Sears tower, the FT reports.

The website calls on Willis to "preserve history and be respectful of the great city of Chicago and its people".

During a ceremony at the building attended by Chicago's mayor, Richard Daley, and Joe Plumeri, chief executive of Willis, the company said it was making a $100,000 donation to the group leading Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
