Accident-prone pets are wrea-king havoc in the home, according to new figures.

Service agreement specialists Currys Coverplan received around 3,500 distress calls last year from pet owners reporting accidents in the home involving pets.

The range of bizarre claims included a hamster stuck in a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine that was ruined when a cat crept inside it, and a gas hob vandalised by a parrot.

Michael Marks, marketing director of Coverplan, said: “Fortunately our service agreements protect against accidental damage – even where goods have suffered damage from the paws or claws of the family pet.”

Dogs are the most destructive animals within the home, feature in 67% of animal-related cases, which Currys refer to as “acts of dog”.
