The insurance sector is widely expected to be amongst the hardest hit in the event of a plunge in share values when the New York Stock Exchange reopens today.

Regulators decided on Friday to relax rules on share repurchasing, borrowing and lending to reduce volatility when the market reopens after its longest break in 80 years.

There have been calls for a patriotic rally to prevent a widespread sell-off across the market.
