Last Friday, at the home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield, Backchat bumped into NU intermediary business director Ken Wallace. But this was only after a double take.

Wallace, left, looking lean, was buried in a suit that was at least a size too large for him. Was the prospect of making 1,600 Hill House Hammond staff redundant affecting his appetite? Or had his tailor decided that Wallace was due for a pre-retirement growth spurt.

Neither seems to be the correct answer. Wallace informed Backchat that he had lost two stone over the past few months and was now tipping the scales at just over 11 stone.

And the reason: "I just cut out pints and sweets. So instead of beer I'm drinking wine and if I fancy a sweet I have an orange."
