Golfing enthusiasts got more than they bargained for at the Insurance Times DAS golf day last month.

Delegates had expected to practise their swings on the courses at St Malo and pick up bags of duty free on the ferry to France. But few could have anticipated the entertainment on offer.

On the boat trip over, Alan Martin entertained 250 golfers at the bar with his karaoke style rendition of "King of the Road". Sadly, Solaglas's business development manager was unable to do an encore since the Roger Miller classic was the only song he knew.

The following day, insurers and reinsurers found themselves well and truly bunkered. Players lost up to five balls on the Des Ormes course.

Rainbow's franchise sales director, Ron Hatton, was one of the many to sink his first ball in the river on the first tee. Others managed only a 5m drive.

Meanwhile, Howard Phillips caused much hilarity. The Norwich Union claims team manager experienced a number of technicolour yawns by a tree at the eighth hole while his colleagues applauded.
