The Primary Group has launched a review to accelerate growth and profitability, which comes into effect on 1 August.

The group has appointed Mike King as chief executive to oversee the changes.

The review sets out 12 business units and 23 profit centres.

"We have taken a decentralised approach to the business," said King.

"In doing that, the outlying businesses need a strength of management they wouldn't need if it was a centralised approach, so it incurs more cost.

"But alternatively, it will create more revenue because you will have more entrepreneurs and people who know what their customers want," he said.

Primary recently launched into the motor insurance market and King said the company had an existing customer base and had also acquired Wensum Agency Insurance Brokers, which was a successful portfolio.

"A lot of businesses start with motor because it's an easy thing to sell.

"We've gone the other way with value-added products and recognised the customers wanted motor as well," he said.

"We're not trying to be Direct Line. We're not trying to compete on a motor product on that scale.

"We're trying to service our customers on a direct basis and through various affinity schemes.

"We're not hitting hard on the really big telesales operations."
