Former Barclays boss tipped to be L&G chairman

Legal & General (L&G) is to hire John Stewart, the former deputy chief executive of Barclays, as its chairman to replace Rob Margetts, The Times reports.

Stewart ran the Woolwich building society until its takeover by Barclays in 2000. He left Barclays in 2003 to become chief executive at National Australia Bank. He is expected to take up his new job in January.

Sir David Walker, the insurer’s senior independent director, has already begun canvassing shareholders over the prospective appointment.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
