It was bad enough for the Christie family when their kitchen was wrecked by fire.
But now a family pet seems determined not to let them get over the trauma.
Charlie, their chattering cockatoo, was so taken by the ear-splitting shriek of their smoke alarm that he has added its sound to his repertoire, threatening to deny the Kettering family a return to a peaceful existence.
Even the restoration technicians from Rainbow International, brought in to clean up the damaged house, have been running out of patience.
Jason Gillingham of Rainbow International said: "During the whole time the firefighters were there and throughout our clean-up operation Charlie has been practising his skills at being a fire alarm.
"Unfortunately, he's got it down to a fine art now so it looks like we will have to start equipping our technicians with ear plugs otherwise they really will be as sick as a parrot."
Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
