The government is to discuss the issue of long-term care in public for the first time.

Entitled “Can we afford long-term care”, the meeting is organised by the Fabian Society and sponsored by PPP Lifetime Care.

Stephen Timms MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, will be one of the speakers at the meeting hosted by the Royal Commission, which will take place at the Labour Party conference on Tuesday September 26 at 6.30pm, in Brighton's Belgrave Hotel.

The Royal Commission's “Majority Report” recommended the covering of all personal care costs in nursing and residential homes, leaving those elderly that who failed the means test to cover the cost of accommodation only. However, its “Minority Report” recommended a true public-private partnership in funding care.

Meanwhile, the government has proposed a marginal increase in the means test and free nursing care in a nursing home.
