Four aircraft have spent the last six months been photographing every inch of Britain in an exercise its organisers call the greatest record of Britain since the Doomsday Book.

The brains behind the Millennium Mapping Company hope that pictures like the one above, which shows close-ups of an out-door swimming pool in Brixton, London, will prove an invaluable tool to claims assessors, risk assessors and other insurance professionals. For instance, the map can help analyse the security aspects of a building as narrow alleyways, tree cover and escape routes become obvious.

State-of-the-art camera equipment in the planes has filmed homes and properties and objects to a size of 25cm. Customers can zoom in on details over the internet.
