Motorists using mobile phones when driving are causing a surge in insurance claims.

According to research by Zurich, 42% of motorists admit to 'multi-tasking' at the wheel.

The study found that 6% of drivers surveyed had an accident or a near miss while using mobile phones while driving.

One in ten drivers questioned admitted to sending text messages while driving.

A spokeswoman said: "You're more likely to have an accident if you're not paying attention, and even small bumps can prove to be expensive to repair."
