Higos MD Ian Gosden says the OFT probe report should spark an outright referrals ban

Ian Gosden

Higos managing director Ian Gosden believes the Office of Fair Trading report on private motor insurance released today should lead to a ban on all referrals, including those who pay for credit hire cases.

Gosden said: “Part of this investigation is to centre on referral fees after the Office of Fair Trading said the market was ‘dysfunctional’. We should welcome this study, particularly any look at referral fees.

“Referral fees warp the cost of any claim. We should rid the sector of all referral fees for once and for all. Motorists should not be charged for these hidden costs. The OFT says fees are adding some £225m a year to drivers’ premiums. This is simply wrong and should be stopped.

“It is time to return to a more open and honest system in which motorists are charged fairly for their insurance premiums.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
