Gun owners are labouring under the false impression that their weapons are fully covered by household policies, according to firearms insurer Sporting Insurance Services.

Gunsure is the new name for SIS's shotgun and firearms cover. The cover was relaunched at the Shooting 2000 exhibition on April 22 and 23.

It provides crucial public liability and theft cover as well as indemnity for weapons while in use and for accidental damage.

SIS director, David Allison said: "Many members of the shooting fraternity do not realise that they are inadequately insured under their household cover."

Other aspects of the SIS cover are: worldwide personal effects up to £300; personal liability up to £5m, and personal accident and death cover up to £20,000.

A legal helpline is also included as part of the policy.

Sporting Insurance Services is part of the Stuart Alexander Group and the policy is approved by both the Gun Trade Association (GTA) and the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association.

SIS also offers insurance cover, including legal expenses insurance, for gun traders.

According to the GTA, there are one million gunholders licensed in the UK.
