QBE Europe has hired Alfonso De Mares (pictured) as business development manager for Latin America.
De Mares will be based in Miami and report to director of overseas business development Tim Harris.
Before joining QBE, De Mares was a senior vice-president at reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter in Miami.
In his new role at QBE, De Mares will target marine and specialist property and casualty business that is transacted locally and does not come into the London market.
QBE international markets managing director Sam Harrison said: “We have a strong track record supporting businesses in Latin America via Lloyd’s and we will continue to write those risks that come into the London market.
“The volume of business transacted locally, however, continues to grow and Alfonso’s appointment is our first step towards developing a specialty underwriting operation in Miami that brings us closer to brokers and clients in the region and enhances the product offering of QBE’s existing Latin American network.”
