Pet owners beware. Guy Fawkes Night could lead to expensive sessions with the dog whisperer.

Recent research claims that the sounds and smells of fireworks can leave dogs and cats traumatised.

The cost of treating our forlorn furry friends following a fireworks show reached £1.6m last year, according to Sainbury’s Bank.

Although the source of this research may give some sceptics ‘paws’ for thought, Sainbury’s Bank has recommended consumers look for insurance that covers vet fees in excess of £3,500.

Otherwise don’t be surprised if you find your pup wandering listlessly around the house, buried snout-deep in a tub of Ben & Jerry’s when the fireworks end.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
