Following our story last week revealing how crafty thieves in the Wirral were using hooks on long sticks to steal keys through letterboxes, Merseyside crooks are once again in the news.

On Sunday, Radio Five Live will reveal the scam of the "Phantom Crash Merchants". It involves doctors examining victims on private medical care who are happy to confirm whiplash while charging £100 per examination.

The programme claims one doctor in Liverpool has made £150,000 signing fake injury claims.

It estimates the scam is costing insurers £120m per year. One solicitor in Liverpool, it is claimed, is handling 20,000 phantom crash frauds.
