A computer-based product that can accurately calculate home re-building costs for insurance purposes has been developed by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and Kings Hill Software.

Rebuilder asks a maximum of 17 questions, does not require someone with insurance knowledge to complete the information and can take into account garages, conservatories and stone-built properties. It uses data supplied by the Buildings Cost Information Service (part of the institute).

Previously, brokers have used costs given by mortgage companies or the Association of British Insurers' table.
