Young drivers are under the impression that they are safer motorists than others despite being more likely to risk their car insurance premiums through risky behaviour, a study has found.

Research conducted by breakdown service Green Flag found that almost a third of teenagers aged between 17 and 24 know someone who risked their car insurance premiums by taking illegal drugs and then driving, while one-third said they had been a passenger in such a situation.

Despite this, 55 % of young drivers felt that they were safer motorists than others, with only 1 % feeling more dangerous.

Philippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: "The research shows that young drivers do have a tendency to think they are safe drivers even though the statistics show they are more at risk."
