There were protests in Moscow last week against the Russian government's plan to introduce compulsory car insurance.

Car insurance is a novel concept in Russia, with only 10% of Russians taking out policies. Car owners drove their Ladas or Volgas for decades without it. When Russian motorists crashed into other cars they paid for the damage on the spot - or resorted to fisticuffs.

But drivers say the new scheme is nothing short of a rip-off and have taken to the streets.

Backchat wonders whether they saw the funny side of the government's refusal to take part in the insurance scheme.

Apparently the Kremlin doesn't have the funds to cover itself. Ouch.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
