Among some of the schemes launched in the personal lines sector this year was the Insurance Industry Award winning Engine Breakdown Cover scheme.

Another scheme, from the Birmingham Assay Office, could bring a sparkle to insurers' eyes. It has launched a jewellery registration scheme that could dramatically reduce the £650m cost of inflated claims.

A special identity mark or Safemark and photographs of insured items of jewellery are placed on to a central database.
