Alleged causes of the train derailment at Potters Bar are fairly unpalatable, said David Martin, Railtrack's account director for the loss adjusting team on the Potters Bar crash.

"There are two options, " he said. "There was either some form of incorrect work done or the accident happened due to deliberate activity. We are investigating to a fairly tight schedule as there is a great desire to get information to the public domain as soon as possible."

He said the line has been restored, which was the main priority and the station has been tided for sufficient use.

The points are being remanufactured but the slow lane of the damaged road bridge is still broken but is not severely affecting traffic.

"The key point is that rail service has been restored in a commendable amount of time," he said.
